片中反复的强调兄弟阋墙的主题。一对发小从小到大混在一起，过着山中不知岁月长的田园生活，一直到战争爆发；隧道外的穆族指挥官是隧道内的塞族指挥官的妹夫；开杂货铺的胖老板和瘦邮递员曾经是最好的朋友。就像波黑战争中的塞族、穆族、克族一样，他们拿起了现代化武器，趴在不同的战壕里，千方百计的想要干掉曾经的兄弟。电影在表现这方面的时候一点都不拖泥带水，没有什么思前想后的恻隐之情，兄弟们见面相互打招呼的唯一方式是子弹，无所不用之极。女教师从隧道外走进来的时候，我觉得这是一个真实的故事，而且因为这个女教师的故事，这部电影有了普遍意义，因为很多人类在互相残杀的时候都用过这样的招数。我很钦佩女教师这个桥段，诗意的，悲伤的残忍。
他们为什么会发生战争？好像不是因为手指头被剪了这么简单。不过，波黑战争的原因大概也不复杂，对有信仰的人来说，一生大概只有两个状态，要么在战斗，要么在准备战斗。一大家子人围坐着，在风和日丽的户外聚餐，电视中的画面或者演讲激发了心中的信仰，于是投身到如火如荼的捍卫战争中，这个其实并不难理解，想想《勇敢的心》中华莱士的鼓惑就释然了。当然，换个角度看，战争本身也很莫名其妙，你能解释清楚我们的三年解放战争吗？几百万中国人互相残杀，开心得不得了，还拍了很多大片用以献礼、纪念，彰显。从来没有感到荒唐悲凉吗？

片子的结构有点小花哨，但是想想这样的内容，如果一直顺着拍过来那就没什么意思了，很难演，也会让调子显得沉重，结构显得笨重，这么一想，现在的结构就有很大优势了。而且把童年那条线埋得很深，一直到最后与成年的结局汇合，这个很漂亮。
我很喜欢片尾结束时的那首歌，一剪子下去，嗷的一声嘶叫，全南斯拉夫人都在摇滚。
我发现维和部队在南斯拉夫人的眼中维持着万年无法翻身的小丑形象，他们在不同的电影中尽情的嘲讽维和部队，最突出的是同题材电影《无主之地》。在本片中维和部队也露了可爱的一小脸。
