問：據我的了解，你對電影的接觸最早是在大學時代跟著楊德昌拍片。但你大學念的是藝術學院戲劇系，怎麼會認識楊德昌呢？你怎麼跟電影發生關係的呢？
鴻：因為我們那時候沒有一個理想的電影科系，而且高中我也對表演藝術蠻感興趣的，我想說戲劇可以兼跨電影、文學、表演藝術這幾項的綜合藝術。 所以我想如果學劇場的話對我以後要拍電影也有幫助。所以我那時候就考戲劇系。當時我的指導老師是賴聲川。在我大四升大五那年的暑假，那時候剛好楊德昌要拍 《恐怖份子》，賴老師就推薦我到楊德昌哪裡實習。所以是因為賴老師的關係，我才認識楊德昌，進入電影圈。
問：那你之後做了哪些電影的相關工作呢？
鴻：畢業之後，我先當了兩年兵。然後做了半年《中時晚報》的電影記者。
問：你怎麼會去當電影記者？
鴻：其實我在當兵的時候就找到這個工作，所以退伍第二天我就進報社了。因為那時候的主編是黃寤蘭嘛！她跟賴聲川他們都很熟。也不曉得怎樣，黃寤蘭看過我在學校時的報告，而且我在大學的時候就已經大量寫文章在外面發表，她已經知道我，她就找我進報社當記者。
問：這段當記者的經驗帶給你哪些影響呢？
鴻：那半年給我一些非常好的訓練，我現在坐下來只要有想法我立刻可以寫。這完全是記者生涯訓練出來的。但是我對報紙搶時效的作法不太能適應。 報紙就是一有什麼事情，它就要第一時間拿到這個消息。而且不管確不確定，它就要你第一時間做出來。所以常常很多東西沒有時間求證就必須寫，很多捕風捉影的 事情你必須寫出來。但我覺得搶時效很無聊。我今天知道跟明天知道有什麼差別？因為我們是晚報嘛！我今天知道，但還沒有經過求證所以我不寫，被明天的日報寫 掉了，晚報就覺得不值得寫了。但是我覺得日報寫了，我們晚報可以更深入的寫不也是很好的作法？為什麼要在還沒證實的情況下去寫呢？這種情況發生一次兩次， 我就開始寫得很心虛。後來我覺得我真的不適合這個工作，我就離開了。但我也是因為當記者的關係認識蠻多人，這些人對我後來對拍電影提供很多的幫助。
問：你不當記者之後，做了哪些工作呢？
鴻：後來我被楊德昌找去編《牯嶺街少年殺人事件》。那時候的編劇除了楊德昌和我之外還有另外兩個人，一個是長期跟他合作的副導賴銘堂，一個是我的學弟楊順清。我們四個人一起討論。然後大家討論完，我就執筆把它寫出來，楊德昌再拿去改。《獨立時代》也是這樣的方式。
問：這段期間你一直跟著楊德昌嗎？
鴻：沒有。我中間有跑去做雜誌、做劇場、出國。因為他片子很慢，而且電影公司也養不起我這個人，他們付不起我每個月的薪水，所以我一定要用其他方式求生存。
問：為了生存，你做過哪些工作？
鴻：我也不知道我是怎麼賺錢的。我做過雜誌的編輯、記者，像《表演藝術》的第一年，我就兼任主編的工作。還有靠寫東西，有幾年我是靠著文學上 面的收入，例如一些文學獎、或國家文藝基金、或創作補助這些獎金來過活。做劇場則完全賺不了錢。我排一個戲，準備就要一兩個月，排練至少也要一兩個月，四 五個月下來我可能只拿到一兩萬塊。電影賺的錢也非常少，而且你自己拍片的話就是賠錢的。另外我也辦過詩刊，《現代詩》那個詩刊是我們自己掏錢辦的。基本上 我做那麼多事，每天忙得要死，但我另外還必須去做一些賺錢的工作。
問：在這段期間，你有想過要自己拍片嗎？
鴻：會去做電影的人都是想拍片的。
問：可是你好像隔了將近十年才拍出《三橘之戀》？
鴻：對。直到1998年我才拍了《三橘之戀》。1994年的時候，我剛做完《獨立時代》，因為跟楊德昌在理念上有些地方不一樣，我離開楊德 昌。我拍電影的經驗完全是跟他工作學來的。跟他工作劇本，每個劇本結構基本上都要厚實到某個程度。也許它只是一個單純的愛情故事，但它背後整個社會網絡都 要做得結實。事實上這跟我自己在寫詩跟創作的個性蠻不一樣的。這有助於我日後的編劇。但是我覺得我想拍的東西跟他不一樣。但到底是什麼東西，我也不確定。 所以中間有幾年我跑去做劇場。那幾年我根本就放棄拍電影的想法。我做劇場做得很愉快。我從1994年成立劇團，到1996年出國之間，我每年做兩到三個 戲，做得很快樂，也累積很多的劇場工作經驗。後來真正影響我拍電影的是我後來去了法國。在1996到1997年期間，我拿了教育部一個巴黎國際藝術村的獎 助，去巴黎住一年，那一年我看了蠻多電影，尤其是《布拉格之春》，還有很多1968年那時候的捷克電影。那時候是捷克年輕人創作非常旺盛的時候，而且都是 年輕人的小品，包括Milos Forman，就是後來拍《月亮上的男人》、《阿馬迪撕》的導演。我看了他早期的幾部片子。這幾部電影他都用同樣的場景，同樣的主角，你看得出來是同時拍 的，每部片都七十分鐘，都是講年輕人的狀態。我覺得很有趣。原來電影不一定要像楊德昌做得那麼大。我也可以用很少的資金，很簡單的方式講很簡單的故事，它 也是一種創作。所以我就想起我大學時期曾經寫過的一個劇本，我把它重新寫了一遍，就是《三橘之戀》。回國之後我就用這個劇本去投短片輔導金。剛好那時候是 第一次有一百萬的短片輔導金。據我後來的了解，評審之所以會選我的原因是因為我一直在寫劇本、也拿過金馬獎最佳編劇、又有劇場經驗，他們很想看看這樣出身 的人會拍出什麼東西，就讓我吊車尾掛上。
問：《三橘之戀》完成之後，你曾經在誠品視聽室放映過，頗受好評。當初怎麼會想在誠品放映呢？
鴻：因為我跟誠品的人蠻熟的，我跟他們提這個想法的時候，他們也都覺得不錯，而且他們願意算我很低的場租，所以就在那邊放。
問：《三橘之戀》在國外得到了很多獎項，包括威尼斯影展觀摩影片、南特影展最佳導演，還有芝加哥國際影展。你當初怎麼知道參加這些國際影展？
鴻：因為我老婆翠華，她以前當過三屆金馬獎國際組的組長，跟國外影展有一些聯絡與接觸。1998年的時候網路還沒有那麼普及。所以我們都用寫 信的方式跟國際影展要報名表、要簡章。要到簡章之後，我們會討論看看我們的電影適合投哪些影展。《三橘之戀》真的是狗運，一投威尼斯影展就進去。當時我們 完全傻眼。因為它只是一個16釐米的短片。可能因為那一年台灣沒有一個電影去威尼斯，它們就選了《三橘之戀》吧！
問：所以是你主動報名參加影展的？
鴻：對。一開始多半都是主動報名。我也投其他影展，南特跟芝加哥我都拿了兩個獎，後來就變得很順利。其他影展就會主動來邀約參展。
問：你那時候已經知道影展有特定的取向嗎？
鴻：《三橘之戀》還不知道，到《人間喜劇》才比較熟。其實每個影展選片的目的都不太一樣。有的是為了秀新電影，有的是市場展，為了做生意，目的都不太一樣。
問：你可以舉例一下嗎？
鴻：我們比較熟悉的三大影展就是威尼斯、柏林、坎城。它們都是片量最大最多的影展。而且它們都要國際首映的片子，你可以在你國家放，但不能在 國外放。因為是新貨嘛！它就會吸引最多人去看。這時你要有很好的公關，去幫你邀請到一些人來看片，才有人幫你寫評論，幫你把片子賣出去。要不然一兩百部片 子，誰要看你的片子呢？威尼斯感覺有點像電影圈的上流社會。但我第一次去威尼斯的時候完全不知道這麼一回事，就傻傻的在那邊貼海報。南特影展則是另外一種 影展。它主要針對當地的觀眾。當地觀眾因為長年看亞洲電影已經看成精了。我去那邊發現它們的觀眾比台灣觀眾對台灣電影更了解。它們對蔡明亮、楊德昌電影的 熟悉度絕對超過台灣觀眾，它們很support這樣的影展。南特影展主要關注亞洲電影，有很多對這方面有興趣的片商會去參加南特影展。以亞洲來講，除了三 大影展，南特影展是一個蠻重要的據點。芝加哥影展就比較像我們的金馬影展，它也有一個競賽單元，但是並不重要。它有點像金馬獎的國際影展，主要就是邀請一 些國外不錯的電影來放，給當地的群眾看，當地的知識份子就寫寫影評，大家開心，這樣。
問：你的《三橘之戀》與《人間喜劇》得到不少獎項，有幫助你買賣版權或籌措下一部電影的拍片資金嗎？
鴻：幫助不多。有幫助是說，一個影片它的光環越多，片商或買家會多看你一眼。因為片商手上會拿到非常多的資料，我覺得這對第一印象是有幫助的。可是對真的版權交易就不見得。
問：《三橘之戀》之後，你又獲得輔導金拍攝《人間喜劇》與《空中花園》，這三片的題材差異很大，你是怎麼構思題材與影片內容？
鴻：其實《三橘之戀》和《人間喜劇》比較像，都是我自己的生活經驗累積起來。《人間喜劇》裡面的四段故事雖然沒有一個是我自身的故事，但都是 我的體驗。像劇場的那一段，阿興跟他媽媽與導演的關係。雖然我沒有那樣的經歷，因為我不是演員。可是對我來說，怎樣在藝術與家庭中間取得一個平衡卻是令我 感同身受的。像我家裡對我一直在做這些朝不飽、夕不暖的工作一直不太能認同。他們從開始的不理解，到後來慢慢容忍到最後接受，這樣的過程我有類似的體驗。 所以我才想做這樣一個情節，就是媽媽和兒子的關係。《空中花園》就比較不一樣。它本來是一個劇場作品，它比較像一個跟演員玩出來的東西。它談的是一個消費 社會裡衣服和人的關係，這是大家即興發展出來的東西，我只是用一個觀點去整理所有的素材。我比較像是一個蒐集者，用「衣服」這個題目去蒐集很多東西，激發 每個演員的潛能，跟大家一起玩遊戲。所以我覺得那個片子比較像一個團體遊戲，它不是要講我的人生經驗，它是要講一群人的集體潛意識，整個社會的集體潛意 識。
問：這三部影片你幾乎都是靠輔導金才能完成？
鴻：恩。沒有輔導金，我今天還是一個劇場導演，我連一部片都拍不起來。我覺得輔導金很重要，一直以來它都有很多紛爭，一直以來都有很多問題。因為這個輔導金從來都沒有被好好發過。
問：你對現在的記點制度有什麼看法？
鴻：我覺得這是非常荒謬的。記點它他等於讓富者愈富，貧者愈貧。比如說，侯孝賢、蔡明亮他們之前的片子拿了獎，也去國外參展，這些都給他們很 多的點數，所以他們可以繼續拍下去，這讓那些本來就有資源的人一直有資源。本來沒有資源的人，比如說魏德聖，他短片拍得非常好，但他那部片沒有得過任何 獎，所以他是個零點數的導演。這麼一個有才華的導演，但他在這一套體系裡面，他找不到任何機會。而且這個制度也會造成大家全部去找有點數的演員和工作人 員。比方李屏賓得了金馬獎的最佳攝影，所有的人都去找他，其他攝影師卻沒有人要找，因為找他們沒有點數。我覺得對整個生態來講其實更惡化。本來我們每個人 拍電影的時候我們會去找我們喜歡的工作人員來合作，讓大家都有飯吃。但這個記點制度之下，就會變成有的人忙死，有的人完全沒事做。所以我覺得這是一個非常 荒謬的記點方式。
問：輔導金在這兩年變成記點？你有再投過嗎？
鴻：其實我有候補上，跟鄭文堂一樣，只有三百萬元，但我沒有要。我把它退回去了。因為我的片子需要兩三千萬，當初我申請的是一千萬，但它卻只 有給我三百萬，那等於要我傾家蕩產，我不可能這樣做。因為我現在已經沒有錢可以賠了。我能賠的，包括跟我爸媽借的都賠光了。所以我就先停在這裡。下一部片 我一定要找到充足資金我才能開工。其實我每拍一部片我都希望跟前一部片完全不一樣。累積了前三部影片的經驗，我想拍一個比較大的、一個新的類型、一個新的 創作方式。但沒有足夠的錢，我就先把它擺在那邊。先做別的事情。
問：你最近都在做什麼呢？
鴻：我這兩年都在拍紀錄片。
問：可是你資金哪裡來？
鴻：公共電視的紀錄觀點。
問：在台灣拍電影真的很艱辛，是什麼讓你可以堅持拍電影，電影對你來講有什麼意義？
鴻：我想會想繼續拍電影其實是因為它是一個創造的形式，是一個可以表達自己，記錄自己身邊現實的一個形式，一個媒體。就像我剛跟你講的，以前 我覺得我無所謂，我可以做劇場就好。但現在我開始有點戀舊，開始有點喜歡身邊這種枝枝節節的這些東西，包括人、包括場景、包括很多生命經驗等等。我很希望 能夠透過一些故事，把很多我想記錄下來的東西暗渡陳倉的透過電影把它們呈現出來。
